A gorgeous serpent carving circa mid 1700s France. Created by a master carver, the snake is fluid and perfectly proportioned with a wonderful sense of movement. Its skin is carefully carved in a uniform diamond pattern that is very tactile. The base is stippled to look like earth; the column is beautifully carved with layers of graduating pinecone scales; it is topped by a nest of deeply veined leaves flared out to hold a crystal ball or candle.Mounted with an antique hand-made screw onto a carved alabaster base. The base sits in an ornately carved alabaster octagon rise that mirrors the octagonal base of the wood carving. The ancient wood is very dry, with chipping to the top, see photos. Dings to and darkening of the alabaster though in very good shape overall considering how old it is. The serpent ascending is symbolic of wisdom and the life force, spiritual power and awakening. The pine cone is an ancient symbol of enlightenment. The octagon 8-sided base represents harmony, balance and renewal.
Crystal balls are not included. Photos taken with daylight bulbs for accurate color; monitor colors may vary. These are items from my own collection. I've taken great care to provide an accurate description and have provided many large clear photos. The high resolution photos are part of the description.
