Antique French Princely Candelabra Pierre Philippe Thomire Gilded Patinated
In gilded and patinated bronze, representing the winged figure of Victory. Exceptionally fine engraved and moulded bronze and. The figure holds in each hand a triple not including a center spire for a total of four candlesticks sorry I wasnt good at showing them all in the pictures. The figures stands on a cyndrcal base capped with a sphere adorned with leaves of water, resting on a square Variegated Marble base with turned feet in gilded bronze and an oil rubbed patinated Winged Victoire Figure. I took this to a lighting restoration specialist as there was a short in one of the lighted arms.

He painstakingly took it apart and found early french wire and indications that the center base for the candelabra had been meticulously hollowed out to make a receptacle for wire. And said that the workmanship was something you couldn't have done today and was "above his pay-grade". He replaced and rewired the piece and it is working perfectly. This candelabra was made by one of the most important Paris bronzers of the last quarter of the eighteenth century and the first decades of the following century.

He then becomes the one of the appointed bronzers of the royal manufactory of Sèvres, working with the bronze decoration of most of the great creations of the time. He also works for a rich French and foreign private clientele including some of Napoleon's marshals. NO damage issues or signs or repair; some very light high point burnishing to the Bronze but sharp and crisp. I would imagine over the years the guilding has lost some of the luster but this is as found. I didn't mess with it and it has a fabulous Patina that only comes with great material, craftsmanship and time. 19' inches tall/23 to the top of the bulbs. The personification of Victory as a winged figure was well known in Antiquity as evidenced by a Roman model showing a very similar figure upon a sphere, now in the National Art Collection, Kassel illustrated ibid.

Close inspection reveals the mastery of the chasing, from the free flowing robes that subtly outline the female form, the seemingly naturalistic feathered wings to the winged zephyr masks. There is a company that hand-makes a similar lamp today but it will cost you 14,000.00 with no real historical and not as strong of an aesthetic value.
